Rising PSA With No Urinary Infection, What Does That Mean?

Q: My age 60+ PSA at 4 and now sloping upward at 9 after short course of antibiotic for UTI. No urinary symptoms. Is this unusual?

Answer: Any inflammation near the prostate gland can cause irritation and inflammation to the prostate and lead to elevated PSA levels. A digital rectal exam (DRE), such as a prostate massage is much needed to help distinguish prostate inflammation from UTI and therefore, lead to proper treatment.
